Time to change the journal

Journal Entry: Wed Oct 7, 2009, 11:28 PM

As said in the title :)
I was a bit tired of seeing the old journal page stating that I was out for some months.

It's not that I have important things to say. Many things are happening in my life right now, but not something that I want to bother you people with.
Still, I am happy to have found some new creative fuel. I have no trouble coming out with images lately, even if they all not meet the quality standards I seek. Truth is I have some spare time for myself so I can create more.

I will even find the time to create some new free textures for some items. It's been some time since I released a freebie and I am wanting to give it a try again.

Well, that's all folks.
Stay tuned for more ;)

More than a month away...

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 5, 2009, 3:56 AM

I am not the kind to use this journal to explain my life problems, but for the sake of the people watching me, I think they might need an explanation for the one month absence.

An the reason is: Daphné.

Daphné was born Saturday 30th of May and its my second daughter.

As you might imagine, this last month I have been occupied in preparing her arrival and I had little time to check my messages or do some art. And now it will be some time too, needing to give my daughters some of my time.

Well, if you are not yet tired waiting any art or comments from me, please bear with it a little longer :)

Carrara...

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 7, 2009, 2:47 AM

Well, you see, I had this voucher at DAZ and the offer for the new Carrara 7 express and I decided to go and try it (it cost me nothing, so why not?)
I am now in the process of learning how to use it. I believe this has vast possibilities and that learning it can only help me improve my work.

Still, it is so different from DAZStudio that I am having trouble using it. I guess I will need some time to learn how to use all its capabilities, but right now the small test renders I am doing are looking surprisingly good.

There are some things bothering me too: I can't seem to be able to change several surfaces parameters at the same time like in DAZStudio (for example, selecting several surfaces at the same time and tweaking the bump parameters), I do not know how to correctly set the parameters of the camera, importing DAZ scenes is not working (I guess I have a too old version of studio) and other minor things that I still need to overcome.

Well, now I have some spare time and I am going to use it for learning. I do not expect to make master pieces anytime soon, but it is fun to try :)

If anyone has interesting tutorials about carrara7, I am looking for some :)

Critique me...

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 2, 2009, 4:41 AM
Hi people...
I do not know if you all have noticed, but right now in deviantart, those that have a subscription and activate the beta testing have access to a brand new feature: the critique request.
When submitting a deviation, you can request for it to receive critics and a new option appears under your deviation for people to leave well constructed comments.

I find this is one feature DA has been lacking and I think it is one of the best improvements lately. I have activated it on my latest deviation (here on the left) and if it has yet to receive any critic, I believe this is a tool any artist out there could use to improve himself. It was hard to tell until now if an artist would welcome critics in his pieces, but now it would become clear. On top of that, you should not be scared to use it, since you need to approve the comments left in that field in order to have them appear to the public. If you find that some of those critics are nonsense you can simply leave them hidden.

Still, this option has a terrible drawback: you can't tell if a piece has the critics activated until opening it. I plead guilty here and confess that many times I do not open deviations when I do not find the thumbnail interesting. But now, the artist I am watching might be expecting some feedback on his work and I can't tell if I do not open it. It could have been better if DA made it so that critic open pieces got some kind of distinction, but that might come later since it is still in beta phase.

Anyways, I am more than eager to try out this feature, so, if you too want to try it, leave here a comment with a link to one of your deviations open to critic and I will do my best to give you honest feedback.

We all need to improve and this new tool might be the awaited tool.

EDIT: it appears that only beta testers can see this new 'critique' field in the deviation page. That's a shame. I hoped DA wanted us to really test it, and how to test such a feature only between beta testers?
Well, I hope this feature becomes available to all as soon as possible!

Obsession

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 26, 2009, 6:18 AM
I have been looking too much One Piece lately... mainly I guess because I have fallen in love with Nami... Oh!!! Man.... What is wrong with us guys nowadays that can fall in love with fictional characters? I guess I should go and make a check on my brain... :P

Anyways, I have become obsessed with the idea of creating my own Nami settings for A4. I have been tweaking dials and materials for hours now, and this is the WIP right now:

I really would appreciate feedback on it. I think I have looked too much into it and right now I can't tell if it is looking ok. I think many of us have that problem and need help from others from time to time.

Well, now I need to go and model some props for her :D

EDIT 032609
I created her weapon in Blender, tell me what you think :)
